Eminent Alumni Award
“The thing that is common between [students of my era and those of today], I think, has to be the sense of purpose of building beyond yourself, beyond your family. Even beyond the current generation [to] the next generation. And if we can keep to that purpose, this sense of always looking over the horizon, always doing things—as old Rajaratnam used to say—doing things today with tomorrow clearly in mind, I think it’ll be very, very interesting and very powerful, [the] sort of scale of opportunities that we can see.”
Ms Ho Ching (Engineering '76)
Chairman, Temasek Trust
Lifetime Service Award
“I think what triggered my commitment [and] my desire to serve was, I actually believe in the cause. I believe that NUS is actually doing good, not just educating, but preparing people for life. [In] my 12 years on the [NUS Board of Trustees], I've probably learned more and taken away more than I believe I put in. And it's made me a more [well-rounded] person. The honour of the award is not lost on me, and I'm humbled by it. But I will say, no one can contribute in isolation. You're always contributing as part of a team, as part of a community.”
Mr Andrew Lim Ming-Hui (Law '85, LLM '88)
Partner, Allen & Gledhill LLP
“[We] belong to a smaller group of people who have [had] the chance, the opportunity, to experience university education and benefited from that. As alumni, the least that we can do is to pay it forward. But the question is not if we should help, but rather, if you are in a position to give [and] help uplift the community that you belong to, then how can you not?”
Mr Johnny Tan Khoon Hui (Science '82)
Past Co-Chairperson, NUS Alumni Advisory Board (2018-2024)
“My personal mantra has always been, be good, do good. [As alumni], we can definitely help in mentoring some of these young students, and a lot of us have also contributed in terms of financial aid to needy students. We hope that each student, when they receive a bursary, understands that they have been helped, and moving forward, when they have the capacity to do so, will also pay it forward and contribute back to NUS.”
