On 23rd November 2024, NUS Global Studies welcomed back over 40 alumni for a heartwarming reunion to commemorate 10 years of the NUS Global Studies programme. The Global Studies major at NUS was conceived as a response to the pressing need for an interdisciplinary approach to understand the multifaceted consequences of globalisation. Global Studies is a transformative field of inquiry established in the last half century that scrutinises the far-reaching impacts of globalisation across political, economic, social, and cultural spheres. In 2014, the first batch of majors of over 150 students successfully launched the full-fledged degree programme. Today, the Global Studies major is popular with students looking for globally-oriented interdisciplinary training, while our Global Studies graduates continue to flourish in a diverse range of fields by harnessing the skills and knowledge they have acquired through the programme.
Organised by faculty members and alumni, the NUS Global Studies Homecoming Lunch successfully brought together graduates from across the past decade, including from our pioneer batch, who have all branched out and made significant strides in their respective careers. The anniversary lunch commenced with an opening address by the Global Studies Academic Convenor, Dr George Radics, who reflected on the success and evolution of the program, as well as shared some exciting developments in store. One of such announcements included the upcoming establishment of the NUS Alumni Global Studies Network (GSN).
During the lunch, alumni also had time to reconnect with their past lecturers and coursemates, sharing their happy memories of the classroom, while networking and sharing their life updates. They also bonded with each other and forged new connections through fun games like Kahoot and Jeopardy, where alumni put their general knowledge to the test!
Hearing from the alumni about their fond memories of NUS and how their experiences and learnings from the Global Studies programme have shaped their lives and careers today was a truly heartwarming experience. It was truly a pleasure reconnecting with so many Global Studies alumni coming from diverse backgrounds, professions and life paths. We plan to continue reconnecting with our Global Studies alumni, strengthening our upcoming NUS Alumni Global Studies Network (GSN). Upcoming events and casual social gatherings are in the works, so do sign up to join the network or email staff advisor Dr Shelley Guyton (stguyton@nus.edu.sg) to find out more!
