{"id":3947,"date":"2023-10-01T15:49:47","date_gmt":"2023-10-01T15:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev-alumn-nus.pantheonsite.io\/alumnus\/?p=3947"},"modified":"2025-07-28T15:41:16","modified_gmt":"2025-07-28T07:41:16","slug":"reaching-for-the-stars","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/alumni.nus.edu.sg\/thealumnus\/2023\/10\/01\/reaching-for-the-stars\/","title":{"rendered":"Reaching for\u00a0the Stars"},"content":{"rendered":"\t\t<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"3947\" class=\"elementor elementor-3947\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-62bc0c12 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"62bc0c12\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-323c67\" data-id=\"323c67\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2ad05e83 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2ad05e83\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n<p>A remote sensing nanosatellite built by multidisciplinary students from the NUS College of Design and Engineering (CDE) has been successfully launched into orbit from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre near Chennai in southern India.&nbsp;<em>Galassia-2<\/em>&nbsp;blasted off at 9am on 30 July 2023 aboard PSLV-C56, a rocket operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Galassia-2<\/em>&nbsp;is a 3U CubeSat class of nanosatellite, measuring 300mm in height, 100mm in length and 100mm in width, and weighs about 4kg. Its primary mission is remote sensing for agriculture and environmental change using a multispectral camera on board.&nbsp;<em>Galassia-2<\/em>&nbsp;was launched alongside six other satellites, including the 351.9kg DS-SAR,&nbsp;a Singapore-owned earth observation satellite.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nus.edu.sg\/alumnet\/images\/librariesprovider2\/issue-135\/img-26bdb4e0eb6804123b89cc749f40079a3.jpg?sfvrsn=1a5b0f8e_2\" alt=\"\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Galassia-2 project leaders Mr Eugene Ee (right) and Mr Ng Zhen Ning (Engineering \u201915) (left) overseeing integration of the satellite with the deployer system prior to launch.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Shaping the future\u2019<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>After deployment, mission controllers spent the next few days stabilising and establishing contact with&nbsp;<em>Galassia-2<\/em>, checking that all the deployables have performed correctly, and conducting functional tests for the satellite\u2019s sub-systems before beginning the mission proper. It is expected to be operational for between six months and a year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project was conceptualised in 2017 by a team of research staff and developed with around 20 multidisciplinary Final Year Project (FYP) students from CDE\u2019s Innovation and Design Programme (iDP) and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. \u201cThe successful launch and deployment of&nbsp;<em>Galassia-2<\/em>&nbsp;is another demonstration of CDE\u2019s leading role in training the next generation of space engineers here in Singapore,\u201d said Professor&nbsp;Teo Kie Leong (Science \u201992), Acting Dean of CDE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy bringing together students from various engineering disciplines, the<em>&nbsp;Galassia<\/em>&nbsp;project is an opportunity to push technological boundaries and shape the future of Singapore\u2019s space industry. From left to right: Mr Soh Eng Keng (instructor), Mr La Wunn Htet Aung, Ms Tan Ying Ying, Mr Seow Jing Ye, Mr Hong Wei Xun, Ms Luo Sha and Mr Eugene Ee (instructor).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">STUDENTS TAKE THE LEAD<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Galassia-2<\/em>&nbsp;follows on the heels of the first&nbsp;<em>Galassia<\/em>&nbsp;nanosatellite launched in December 2015, which alongside&nbsp;<em>Kent Ridge 1<\/em>&nbsp;became the first NUS-built&nbsp;satellites to go into orbit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project is supported by the Engineering Design and Innovation Centre (EDIC), the Satellite Technology And Research Centre (STAR) and the Centre for Remote Imaging, Sensing and Processing (CRISP) at NUS. \u201c<em>Galassia-2<\/em>&nbsp;is envisioned as part of a series of student-built nanosatellite projects,\u201d said EDIC instructor and project leader Mr Eugene Ee (Engineering \u201914), who has been involved in the CubeSat development since the start of the project. \u201cIt builds on the knowledge gained from the&nbsp;<em>Galassia<\/em>&nbsp;experience in 2015 and features several in-house undergraduate student-developed components, such as the payload computer, solar panel release system, attitude determination, and control subsystem and battery pack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During<em>&nbsp;Galassia-2<\/em>\u2019s mission, controllers expect to be in contact with the satellite on a weekly basis and will downlink images from it over the S Band frequency via the ground station at CRISP. He is currently based in California, the United States, working for Parsons Corp on its satellite integration programme. He previously worked for SpinLaunch, helping to develop cameras able to withstand the extremely high G-forces of the launch system.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sfContentBlock\">\n<h4>DREAMS TAKE FLIGHT<\/h4>\n\u201cAs a student, I was responsible for developing the structure of\u00a0<em>Galassia-2,<\/em>\u00a0the mechanisms of the solar panel deployment system, and the vibration test plan. Subsequently, staying at NUS as a research engineer, I was responsible for the final structure of\u00a0<em>Galassia-2<\/em>, including the solar panel deployment system, structural analysis and orbital thermal analysis, as well as preparations for vibration and thermal vacuum testing and integration of\u00a0<em>Galassia-2<\/em>.<br \/><br \/>Working on the\u00a0<em>Galassia<\/em>\u00a0programme helped me a lot in understanding the landscape of the space industry. It also armed me with the required skill set to thrive in the industry, such as design, analysis, testing and team collaboration, as well as project management.<br \/><br \/>Seeing\u00a0<em>Galassia-2<\/em>\u00a0head into orbit, I felt a mixture of anticipation, excitement and relief, knowing that this culmination of multiple years of effort from students and staff was finally ready to fly.<br \/><br \/>My advice to those thinking of a career in space engineering: Stay curious, and always ask questions! Engineers are always excited to share what they know, and you can learn a whole lot of knowledge that will be useful in your career.\u201d<\/div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nus.edu.sg\/alumnet\/images\/librariesprovider2\/issue-135\/img-4.jpg?sfvrsn=64a81dde_2\" \/>\n<figcaption><strong>Mr Ajie Nikicio<\/strong>\u00a0(Engineering \u201915) is another fromer participant of the Design Centric Programme, who worked on the first\u00a0<em>Galassia<\/em>\u00a0nanosatellite and then\u00a0<em>Galassia-2<\/em>\u00a0as a research engineer. In 2020, he launched his own satellite technology startup, Netra.<\/figcaption>\n<\/figure>\n<div class=\"sfContentBlock\">\u201cAfter graduation, working as a Research Engineer on the\u00a0<em>Galassia-2<\/em>\u00a0project, I was responsible for developing the guidance, navigation and control (GNC) systems on the satellite, working with IDP students on both the hardware and software. Building on what we had learned from the first\u00a0<em>Galassia<\/em>\u00a0satellite, we wanted to push the technology further.<br \/><br \/>\u201cIncorporating an imagery payload on\u00a0<em>Galassia-2<\/em>\u00a0was not an easy task. The satellite avionics were far more challenging than the first\u00a0<em>Galassia<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 requiring, for example, higher energy capacity, bigger data storage, higher data transmission and more precise manoeuvring. Nonetheless, we wanted to prove that our team could launch increasingly sophisticated satellites despite our limited experience and resources, while also building up the capacity and know-how at NUS.<br \/><br \/>Working on a satellite project is complex by nature, involving many parts. I believe this made me rather accustomed to challenging projects and working environments, and shaped me to never be satisfied too early and always do better.
