For many, it\u2019s just the name of a quiet housing estate in the south of Singapore. But for playwright <strong>Mr Titus Hutch Jr. Yim <\/strong>(Arts &amp; Social Sciences, Class of 2026) and performer <strong>Ms Chermaine Kumar<\/strong> (Arts &amp; Social Sciences \u201916), the story is an important chapter in their creative journeys, as The <em>Alum<\/em>NUS discovers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-4e03b13 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"4e03b13\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-d306cc0\" data-id=\"d306cc0\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cea1f18 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cea1f18\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Titus, you\u2019re still a student, and Chermaine, you graduated almost a decade ago. Tell us about where you are in your journeys now.<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Titus<\/strong>: I\u2019m in my final year of psychology. I used to be a double major in Theatre Studies, but now I\u2019m minoring in Life Sciences and focusing on writing. I\u2019ve been in Mandarin theatre since primary school, actually. I was lucky to be mentored by teachers from Shanghai Theatre Academy \u2014 they really shaped the way I think about language and storytelling.<\/p><p><strong>Chermaine<\/strong>: I was from NUS Social Work. But I\u2019ve always done theatre \u2014 since I was two years old, actually! In NUS I joined the Chinese Drama CCA because it felt warm and communal. Her name literally translates to \u2018Princess of Golden Beauty\u2019. One thing we found interesting was that Radin Mas was a migrant in some sense \u2014 she came from Java with her father and started a new family here. We thought those struggles were relatable not only to us but also to the migrant worker community.<\/p><p><strong>Chermaine: <\/strong>They were looking for a migrant worker to cast, and in the last year, I\u2019ve always been cast as a maid, so I thought, okay, I\u2019ll try. I used to work in a hospital with many nurses from Myanmar, the Philippines and Malaysia, and I really resonated with their stories. They take care of our families here but worry about their own families back home.<\/p><p><strong>Titus, tell us about the stories you are drawn to?<\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Titus<\/strong>: I have a journal, and every time I come across a person who has an interesting story or a newspaper article about something that is out of the norm, but thought-provoking, I will write it down. It\u2019s always scarier to have no salary than to give one up. But I realised that I feel more alive on stage than anywhere else. For years, theatre was something I did on the side \u2014 community plays, small parts. Then one day I told myself: it\u2019s now or never. Social work will always be there. But if I don\u2019t try acting now, I might regret it forever.<\/p><p><strong>Titus, why did you choose to use comedy to tell this story?<br \/><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Titus:<\/strong> We wanted to make Mandarin accessible. There\u2019s this notion that it\u2019s very serious, it\u2019s very difficult, very archaic, and I think we wanted to use comedy as an entry point \u2014 to make it inclusive to families. So if there\u2019s a joke the grandparents understand, then that could bring conversations between the grandparents and the grandchildren as well.<\/p><p><strong>What\u2019s the difference between working in English and Mandarin theatre?<br \/><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Titus:<\/strong> Language shapes how a story breathes. Mandarin is image-rich \u2014 it evokes rather than just describes. That changes how a play feels. In English theatre, the language tends to be more direct. In Mandarin, there\u2019s space for imagery, rhythm and silence to do the work.<\/p><p><strong>Chermaine:<\/strong> And it also changes the people. In Chinese drama, the vibe is different. It\u2019s very communal, warm, familial. Even the way we address each other is different. In English theatre it\u2019s more casual. In Mandarin, there\u2019s a kind of hierarchy but also a lot of care. I don\u2019t know how to describe it, but it just feels like family.<\/p><p><strong>What do you hope audiences take away from this production?<br \/><\/strong><\/p><p><strong>Titus:<\/strong> I think it\u2019s about creating a space where people can come together \u2014 across generations, across different backgrounds \u2014 and just enjoy the story.<\/p><p><strong>Chermaine:<\/strong> I hope they come with open hearts. Maybe they\u2019ll see something familiar in a new way. Maybe they\u2019ll hear a story they haven\u2019t really listened to before.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-3595c4d elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"3595c4d\" data-element_type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-5c48550\" data-id=\"5c48550\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d3eafac elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"d3eafac\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>SO WHO WAS RADIN MAS, REALLY?<\/strong><\/p><p>According to legend, Radin Mas Ayu was the daughter of a warrior prince from Java. Radin Mas Ayu and her father fled to Singapore to escape persecution and settled in a village in Telok Blangah, where her father\u2019s bravery in defending the community earned him the respect of the Sultan of Singapore. Over time, Radin Mas Ayu became a beloved figure in the area, symbolising strength and compassion.
